Kickstarter: 'Frozen Skies' - A Savage Worlds Dieselpunk RPG

Utherwald Press is planning 'Frozen Skies' as a dieselpunk setting for the Savage Worlds table top RPG game system. This Kickstarter will help get the book looking that bit more polished by Savage Mojo. They will provide layout, cover design and the other little touches that will make 'Frozen Skies' shine.
They currently plan to release 'Frozen Skies' both as a PDF and a full size soft cover book. The £3,000 (approx $4,750 USD) that is being asked for will cover the costs of the artwork, editing, layout, etc. The PDF version will be released first with the hard copy following shortly after via Print-On-Demand.
'Frozen Skies' is a complete game setting custom built for the award-winning Savage Worlds rule-set published by Pinnacle Entertainment Group. You will need the Savage Worlds Deluxe or Explorer's core books to play the game. If you are not familiar with the Savage Worlds RPG, try out the FREE test drive rules here.
Set in the mysterious, frozen lands of Alyeska, the book will be an in-depth and informative guide to its history, geography, myths and legends. It also introduces characters who have made names for themselves in Alyeska including those living on both sides of the law, the pioneering ice pilots without whom the land would be virtually uninhabitable, and the various factions who strive to bring civilisation to this inhospitable world.
If you're wondering, the term Dieselpunk, is an art style, similar to the pseudo-Victorian Steampunk genre, based on the aesthetics popular between 1914 and 1945. The style combines the artistic and genre influences of the period (including pulp magazines, serial films, film noir, art deco, and wartime pin-ups) with postmodern technology and sensibilities. Think of 'The Rocketeer', 'The Legend of Korra', 'Crimson Skies', 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow', 'Dark City' and the 'BioShock' video game series and you'd be spot on.
Check out the video below, and if it's something you might enjoy, go here to pledge and back this kickstart project.

Movie Review: 'The Wolverine'

This second stand alone Wolverine film is a lot better than the first, in my opinion, and with Marvel Studios going full pelt into their universe, what with the recent 'Iron Man 3', 'Avengers, and the upcoming 'Thor 2: The Dark World' and recently announced 'Avengers 2', Fox have had to up their game a bit with their 'X-Men' movies to compete with the similar properties, and it does show, if a little rough around the edges.

The story is better too and tells of Logan's struggle with his immortality, as well as the love story between him and Mariko (Tao Okamoto). I did think that the villains in 'The Wolverine' were a bit meh, throwaway type villains if you will. Not really fleshed out enough, although that was maybe mainly due to the plot being about more of the suits behind corporations than say an evil force to subdue.  That said, if you add in the few decent fight sequences; the funeral, on top of a speeding bullet train and of course the climactic fight at the end, plus the deep Japanese culture and lush scenery throughout, it's a decent enough effort into the X-Men mythos. Entertaining, but maybe not quite on par with the Marvel/Disney efforts, but almost there.

And a word of warning, you've just GOT to stay after the end credits, as it seems to set up things to come. It's worth it, believe me!

Trailer For The New 'Bioshock Infinite' DLC: 'Burial At Sea'

Really enjoyed 'Bioshock Infinite', one of my favourite games of 2013, and with this announcement, although I've not played the first two Bioshock games, I'm fairly looking forward to this DLC!
Come back to Rapture in a story that finds Booker and Elizabeth on the eve of the underwater city's fall from grace. Developed by Irrational Games, the developer of the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite, this DLC features Rapture as you've never seen it before—a shining jewel at the bottom of the ocean, built almost entirely from scratch in the BioShock Infinite engine. Gameplay has been modified to give the player an original BioShock combat experience that merges the best parts of BioShock and BioShock Infinite.
Explore the city when it was at the height of its beauty, meet some old "friends," and make some new ones, all through the eyes of Booker DeWitt. Why are Booker and Elizabeth in Rapture? What was the city like before everything fell to pieces? The answers to these questions and more will be found in BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea -- Episode 1.

Designed by the incomparable J Scott Campbell, Sideshow Collectables brings this irresistible comic siren to life in the Mary Jane Comiquette, the first release in the 'J Scott Campbell Spider-Man Collection'. Cast in high quality polystone, MJ measures 11.5" high, hand painted with a new high-contrast technique, creating added depth and dimension to each piece. Cool Art: 'Saving The World! One Kaiju At A Time!' by Rustam Hasanov

I'm loving the retro propaganda feel of this poster of 'Pacific Rim' inspired art by Rustam Hasanov! I don't think there's been many films, apart from maybe the original trilogy of Star Wars, that has influenced the imaginations of generations of artists, as much as Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim'. Do yourself a favour, rather than waiting for the Blu/DVD, catch the film at the cinema where it deserves to be seen (IMAX if you can), and then you'll see why the film has inspired so many artists!

Cool Art: 'Pacific Rim' by Tomasz Opasinski

Lots of very cool 'Pacific Rim' art out there, and here's another, this time by Tomasz Opasinski.

This is available from Tomasz's Etsy Store as a 27" x 40" digital print on canvas, with an additional 2 inch frame around and limited to only 10 copies, costing £100.

Watch 'The Last Of Us' As A Movie

After turning the new 'Tomb Raider' and 'The Uncharted Trilogy' into full length game movies, Andy Gilleand is back with a new one; 'The Last Of Us'.
If you don't know what this is, no, it's not a "Let's Play" or a walkthrough of any kind. If that were the case, it would be several hours longer. What I did here was try to take the entire story of the game, and edit it down to fit in a movie. I would include gameplay, but only the gameplay I felt was necessary to tell the story. If I could cut sections out without causing plot holes or ruining pacing, I would cut as much as I could. I also played the game several times before doing this to gain a familiarity with the levels, to help me with "directing" the game into a movie as best as I could. This meant doing things you typically wouldn't do while playing the game, such as skipping nearly every one of the items left around, such as ammo or other supplies helpful to survival. I played on Normal mode to minimize the extra difficulty this would cause.

There are a few things that differ this movie from my others. While the game uses the same engine as the Uncharted games, it's been modified. Whenever Uncharted had a button prompt for items or opening doors or whatever, it would usually be towards the edges of the screen, and so it was usually easy enough to edit out. However, Last of Us places button prompts directly on the objects they correspond to, making them very difficult to edit out without it looking bad. So where I could, I edited out the button prompts, but many had to be left as they were. Thankfully there were some options I could disable, such as Melee Prompts and Hints, although some of those still showed up from time to time as well.

Normally, in a game like Uncharted or Tomb Raider, I would be able to skip over a majority of the traversal. However, in this game, so much dialogue is exchanged during these parts, that I felt was critical to the story, that it became very difficult to edit the gameplay down. I ended up leaving in substantial amount of gameplay compared to some of my other movies. Though by skipping collecting items or exploring optional areas, and simply going straight through the levels, I feel I helped speed things along as to not cause the gameplay segments to draw on too long.

Sorry about how long I waited to release this. I'm a big supporter of Naughty Dog. In fact, I support every developer I make game movies from. I believe these games are well worth the full price they are charging, and as such, I don't want to potentially cause anybody to skip out on buying the game simply because they could watch my movie.

First Trailer For '47 Ronin' Starring Keanu Reeves

Whoa! Hmmm, not quite the original 47 Ronin legend then!

'47 Ronin' is out in cinemas December 25.

Movie Review: 'The World's End'

by Tommy Lee Edwards
From the moment the 1990's soundtrack kicks in from the start, right through until to the bitter (or lager) end, I loved this.

Anybody that's done a pub crawl will instantly recognise the younger versions of the main characters we see at the start. After an unsuccessful attempt at the 'Golden Mile' - 12 pubs, 12 pints - twenty years later, the school pals (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan) reluctantly reunite for another crack at the ultimate pub crawl in their home town of Newton Haven. But all is not what it seems in their cosy little town, which soon becomes apparent after a run in with some youths in the gents of one of the pubs!

I think that the script by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have got the right blend of comedy and sci-fi with this film, with some really funny moments scattered in amongst the well crafted sci-fi bits. I really enjoyed the previous two films in Edgar Wright's 'Three Colours Cornetto' trilogy, and this one continues by keeping Pegg and Frost's characters at the centre of the film, albeit in the role reversal of Nick Frost's Andrew being the smarter more mature one compared with Simon Pegg's Gary King, and it works wonderfully. I'm also thinking that there is a big love for Primal Scream's 'Loaded', as they do quote the opening line to the song quite a bit. Can't complain too much as I do like it!

With a cracking 90's soundtrack, and if you've enjoyed Edgar's previous work, including 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' and the TV show 'Spaced' (of which 'The World's End' is as close to a cinematic version you'll probably get) then, like me, you'll get a kick out of watching this film. Go see it if you can!

Cool Art: 'The Lone Ranger' by Paul Shipper

'The Lone Ranger' by Paul Shipper.
"When I first heard about Disney's Lone Ranger movie coming out - I thought, what a perfect movie for an illustrated one sheet! I got very excited to see what may come of the official poster... Sadly, it didn't happen. The marketing seemed to be very Tonto heavy, mostly due to Johnny Depp being in that role. It is called "The Lone Ranger", not "Tonto the Movie".... I felt an opportunity had been missed and so, I decided to create a poster that I thought could be deemed worthy of The Lone Ranger... I only hope you agree... but this was to satisfy my own fan whoes... much like the JJ Abrams Star Trek posters, this is a personal project, for fun...and for the love of the old movie posters I grew up with."

Kickstarter: 'Final Fantasy VII: The Web Series'

I've already posted about the teaser concept trailer for this project from Gionata Medeot and Mattia Ferraro, who aim to revisit all of the most memorable scenes from the 1997 classic Playstation game, and make them available for free on their YouTube channel. Season one will be 5-6 episodes of about 15 minutes each.

They have also secured the rights to the music from the game, and have so far cast the roles of both Barret Wallace (Mars Crain) and Tifa Lockhart (Margie Cox) – but it needs your help. You can now pledge your support to the series on Kickstarter.

Shinra Productions is hoping to raise $400,000. They also have a Red Bubble page where you can buy posters, shirts, hoodies, stickers, mugs, phone cases with more items to come, and all proceeds from these will go towards the cost of the production and promotion of the web series.

At the time of writing it’s raised just over $3,500, and with 29 days to go, it’s going to need a lot more help to reach it's goal.

Go here to check out the Kickstarter project.

"I chose to create a poster for 'Elysium' because first and foremost I LOVE 'District 9' and this looks to almost be a spiritual successor, you can tell from the footage so far released that it is firmly in the same vein of thoughtful Sci-Fi. I can’t wait to see the film.
I also felt that this film has similar elements to the subject matter in my next BIG, personal project and saw it as a chance to do a dry run on what is coming later in the year.
I have made this poster so that it can be easily screen printed and have already prepared it for such an eventuality. I just need to find someone to sell it through!!"
